Concrete Block or Concrete Formwork Foundation
The foundation, or commonly known as the foundation, is a crucial element in the construction of your home. It is indeed the foundation of your house that guarantees the solidity of the building’s structure. For the foundation of your house, it is possible to choose between two types of construction: the concrete foundation and the concrete block foundation. Although also effective for the solidity of your structure, the choice of the foundation of your house will involve crack repairs that are somewhat different.
Find out the differences between these two types of flooring.
How to Differentiate a Concrete Formwork Foundation from a Concrete Block Foundation
It is relatively easy to see the difference between these two types of foundations thanks to their external appearance and contrasting relief. The photo on the right below shows us a concrete block foundation mimicking the appearance of brick. The photo on the left has more of a smooth surface, so it has a house foundation built of formwork concrete.

The concrete technique
The formwork concrete foundation is very famous today. In fact, it’s the most common one these days. This is due to the fact that this type of floor is usually very waterproof and resistant to time.
The technique used to obtain this type of flooring consists of pouring concrete into a formwork. During stripping, vertical marks become visible on the concrete at regular intervals. The marks are caused by the shapes of the formwork used. On each of the vertical lines, there are formwork tie rods (steel rods). These are used to hold the formwork forms together, specifically on either side of the concrete wall.
The technique of foundation concrete blocks
A concrete block foundation is made up of masonry elements bound together by mortar joints. The inside of the concrete blocks is empty and the air inside acts as a natural thermal insulator.
Generally, house floors are more often subject to the risks caused by frost in the case of moist or poorly drained soil. This is why some professionals recommend always insulating this type of foundation from the outside.
Home Foundation: Repairing Cracks
In Quebec, with difficult winters, Groupe Fissure Expert Fondation most often advises using the formwork concrete technique rather than concrete blocks to reduce the harmful effects of the climate on the foundation of your home.
Nowadays, the formwork technique is much more common for house foundations. In addition, with this type of soiling, frost is not to be feared, as it cannot penetrate deep into the foundation and cannot cause damage to the structure.
However, regardless of the type of foundation installed, sometimes the foundations show some cracks or deterioration. In order to make more effective repairs, you need to determine the type and origin of cracks perceived in your walls or in your home flooring. In addition, for the intervention of a professional to be effective and durable, it is important to know whether your foundations are made of concrete blocks or formwork.
At Groupe Fissure Expert Fondation, we believe that cracks rarely require emergency intervention. Nevertheless, it is necessary to inspect your cracks to prevent water infiltration into the building. Our experts will know which product to choose to best seal your cracks according to the circumstances.
